Now in its third edition Gaiafest is an annual fixture, firmly entrenched on the local event calendar. Gaiafest is organized by the Gaia Foundation, a non-profit making NGO set up in 1994 to protect Malta's environment and promote sustainable living. Besides the integrated coastal management of two protected, ecologically sensitive sites at Ghajn Tuffieha and Ramla Bay, the foundation operates an organic and fair trade shop selling its own organic produce, farmed on 3.5 tumoli of land. The foundation also features a tree nursery encouraging biodiversity and the propagation of Maltese indigenous, endemic and rare plant species. To find out more about the foundation's many projects including agroforestery, waste management, habitat restoration, environmental awareness and such, log onto our website at www.projectgaia.org.
